07. inspiration

For this project I have looked into a lot at inspirational photo shots and makeups along with magazines covers and many more. I really like the concept of some of these images, and how they’ve been portrayed to create a story to the public eye. I’m waning to portray my makeup in a photo shot (A magazine cover ideally). As my theme for this project was tribal, I decided to take a look at the worlds tribal gangs and decided to further research into the tribe of Africa.

I really liked the idea of recreating a tribal body paint, I wanted the makeup to portray every aspect within a tribal member from the scares, head pieces to the paint and mud that they apply on their bodies. I have many ideas on how to create this piece of makeup, so test pieces is essential to get the perfect result. For this I need to do a lot of research, as I want it to look as close to a modern age tribal member as possible, I need to research into Africa, tribes and representation by other makeup artists.

Africa

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of the Earth’s total surface area and 20.4 percent of the total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world’s human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Seaalong the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascarand various archipelagos. It has 54 fully recognized countries, nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.

Africa’s population is the youngest among all the continents; 50% of Africans are 19 years old or younger.

Algeria is Africa’s largest country by area, and Nigeria is the largest by population. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.

African Animals

As I was thinking of incorporating all aspects of tribal within my project. The idea of adding animals into the body paint came up after reading about how these families live within the same area as these wild animals.

  • African Buffalo, Zebra, African Lion,
  • Cheetah, African Elephant,
  • African Leopard, Hippopotamus,
  • Giraffes, Rhinoceros, Warthog, Wildebeests

Lion King – The Musical

Look inside yourself. You are more than what you have become. – Mufasa.

Set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains to the evocative rhythms of Africa, this spectacular production explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music to tell the timeless story of Simba and his epic journey to fulfil his destiny as King of the Pridelands.

Julie Taymor, one of the world’s most innovative directors, brought a vast array of disciplines to THE LION KING, including extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions, exploring classic myths through ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement. THE LION KING was the first musical she directed in the commercial theatre, and Taymor made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award for ’Best Director of a Musical’.

This acclaimed production has been seen by over 70 million people around the world, and in addition to the two UK productions can currently be seen in New York, Tokyo, Hamburg, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Sydney and on tour across North America and Japan.

As the creative director for Illamasqua, Alex box is a huge inspiration for makeup artists. Her high fashion images with the mix of digital technology is beautiful and eye catching. I really like the way she incorporate these elements together. Her work has appeared on various magazines cover in which I could use as inspiration towards my very own ‘magazine cover’ within my project.

Magazine covers

Looking into magazine covers is a great way of sourcing inspiration. After numerous researches into different magazines for example illusion magazine, Vogue, Dazed and Miroir amongst many more.

Within all these covers, they all show a similar pattern in the way they were shot and placed within the cover. All the models are very beautiful women but of all different skin types in which I could look into what skin type would benefit my project mostly.

Word body paint festival

The World Bodypainting Festival is an annual festival. From 1998 to 2010, the festival was held in Seeboden, Carinthia, Austria, near the Millstätter See, every year in July. The venue since 2011 is Pörtschach at lake Wörthersee. The world body painting festival was created in 1998 by Alex Barendregt. At the time, Bardendregt was working in a local travel agency and was given the task of organising a new summer event in Seeboden. He chose body painting on a whim after seeing a photograph about it. Although the festival wasn’t very popular at first, today it is the biggest annual event of the body painting culture and community. The festival is the first of its kind in the world and has become the Center of Bodypainting. It draws the best body painting artists from over 40 countries and models, as well as tens of thousands of visitors, from all over the world every year.

The festival lasts a week, of which the first four days consist of over fifty special workshops and lessons run by the WB Academy, and the last three days consist of the actual festival event in the body paint city, which is open to the public without prior reservation. The festival event is open for both adults and children, and many families come there together. The artists compete in many categories: brush and sponge, airbrush, and special effects are World Champion titles. At night time there is also a special UV effects contest giving the title for World Champion in UV bodypainting effects. There is a World Facepainting Award and a special award for special effects face make up. There are also semi professional student awards. All categories have separate prizes and trophies. Artists can use either male or female models as they wish. All models must be wearing underpants while painted, but female models can go topless if they want. Many body painting models are unpaid and volunteer for the unique experience of transformation by the body painting artists.

Body painting is not simply painting a body, body painting is to replant the body into an entire scenery, to create a body scene with choreography and music. The WBF Institute of Sound is the community music project that developed through the World Bodypainting Festival. Every year the festival brings together international musicians, specialists in electronic music and technicians from many different countries and cultures. It is the festival’s goal to develop the music scene like the community of body painters, photographers and models that has already existed for years. The creative thoughts of both groups can develop many new ideas. The WBF Fashion Department focuses on body painting for fashion with many artists working alongside designers and with stylists around the world in the fashion industry. Also the BodyCircus is one of the biggest event highlights in the festival week. Music, shows and costumes in the unique location of the medieval castle Sommeregg. After the 13th year of the event in Seeboden, the local politicians decided not to host the event there any more. Alex Barendregt had to move on and chose another beautiful and charming town for the future to recreate and develop the next generation of the World Bodypainting Festival.
