Its very important that the model is kept safe during the makeup application, as well as myself and anyone else in the studio, to make sure this happens and the application runs smoothly, i have created a quick list of the safety issues i need to mark off before starting.

Personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992 

Prevention or control of the use of hazardous substances is always preferable. It may not always be possible to deal with these risks without the use of personal protective equipment. It may sometimes be necessary to protect employees’ health by issuing protective clothing such as overalls, aprons, masks, eye goggles, gloves or footwear.

Workplace (health, safety and welfare) regulations 1992

Employers must ensure that the workplace complies with the requirements set out in these regulations which cover:

  • ventilation
  • temperature
  • lighting
  • cleanliness
  • waste materials
  • room dimensions
  • workstations and seating
  • condition of the floor
  • falls or falling objects
  • transparent surfaces
  • windows and sky lights
  • doors and gates
  • sanitary conveniences and washing facilities
  • drinking water
  • rest and changing facilities

 Health and safety (first aid) regulations 1981

This legislation sets out essential first aid requirements for the workplace and ensures injured parties receives immediate attention and that an ambulance is called in serious cases. It requires that adequate equipments and facilities are available for first aid to be given. Specific requirements will vary according to individual circumstances, but the minim requirements for any workshop are:

  • a suitably stocked first aid box
  • an ‘appointed person’ to take charge of first aid arrangements

The fire precautions (workplace) regulations 1997 

With the introduction of the fie precautions (workplace) regulations, which came into force on 1 decmeber 1997, the employer is required to assess:

  • what the fire safety risks are
  • how serious the risk of fire is
  • what, if anything, needs to be done

Electricity at work regulations 1989

Electric shocks can cause severe injuries, even fatal ones. Faulty electrical equipment or misuse of equipments can lead to fires that may also cause damage and injury or death. The electricity ay work regulations are concerned with the safe use of electricity in the workplace

Control of substances hazardous to health regulations 2002 (COSHH)

Many people are exposed to hazardous substances at work. Makeup artists will come across many chemicals and substances that, if used incorrectly could be hazardous. Hazardous substances may come in the form of dust, fumes, chemicals and bacteria.
